Invitation from the President
Dear Colleagues,
I am pleased to invite you to attend the 52nd Annual Meeting of the Teratology Society, June 23–27, 2012, at a fantastic venue—the Marriott Baltimore Waterfront in Baltimore, Maryland. The theme for this year’s meeting is “Global Perspectives in Teratology.” The Program Committee, chaired by Ed Carney, has put together a great program around this theme, and the Education Committee, chaired by Chris Curran, has developed Continuing Education Courses entitled “Maternal and Fetal Immunology: Implications for the Prevention of Birth Defects” and “Infections during Pregnancy: Implications for the Prevention of Birth Defects”, that fit the theme as well. The program offers an exciting variety of scientific sessions on topics including reducing the impact of known teratogens, vitamin D deficiency, computational embryology, effects of prenatal methamphetamine, drug safety, exposure effects on adult reproduction, and predictive toxicology. Once again, we are pleased to offer joint sessions and a joint registration fee to maximize interactions with our sister societies, NBTS and OTIS. Reduced registration rates have been established to assist Emeritus members to attend both the meeting and the Education Courses; your continued participation in the Annual Meeting is very important to us.
Our Annual Meeting provides us with the opportunity to promote our shared vision and scientific identity as researchers focused on the causes, manifestations, intervention and prevention of birth defects, both structural and functional. It also is an expression of our scientific diversity, as a Society of clinicians, scientists and science policy regulators, from academic, industrial, and government sectors. There is no better occasion to learn about the latest scientific research in teratology, to interact with scientists whom you have not yet met, and to network with old friends and colleagues. I urge all of you to join us for this special event.
Sincerely,
John M. Graham, Jr., M.D., Sc.D.
Teratology Society President
Why Attend the 2012 Teratology Society Meeting?
The 52nd Annual Meeting of the Teratology Society will be held June 23-27, 2012, in Baltimore, Maryland. The meeting will bring together laboratory scientists, clinicians, epidemiologists and other public health professionals from academia, government and industry to present and discuss the latest research in the field. The theme of the 2012 meeting is "Global Perspectives in Teratology" and will highlight teratology research and issues which have global impact, with topics including maternal/fetal health in developing countries, nuclear disasters, Vitamin D, international regulatory controversies, and novel computational approaches for assessing safety. There also will be joint sessions with OTIS and NBTS covering latent functional effects of developmental exposures, effects of methamphetamines, and strategies to reduce the impact of known teratogens. The 2012 meeting will also feature several newly added sessions: 1) a Grant Funding Workshop with agency program officers, 2) a day-long Pharmaceutical Testing Workshop Series, 3) a Roundtable Session with the Society of Maternal Fetal Medicine, and 4) a satellite workshop with investigators from the National Children’s Study. In addition, there will be numerous career development events designed especially for students and post-doctoral fellows.
The 52nd Annual Meeting will take place over four days. In addition, the Education Course will be offered in two parts on Saturday. The morning course is entitled Maternal and Fetal Immunology: Implications for the Prevention of Birth Defects and the afternoon course is entitled Infections during Pregnancy: Implications for the Prevention of Birth Defects. On Tuesday of the meeting, there will also be a Sunrise Mini-Course on MicroRNAs. The meeting will include five platform sessions for submitted abstracts, as well as two poster sessions which will be held on Monday evening and Tuesday afternoon. The meeting will conclude on Wednesday with the banquet.
The Annual Meeting provides a place and time to catch up with colleagues, make new friends, network, and indulge in discussions from philosophical to practical with established experts in the field, new researchers, and students. It is also a place and time to promote and express our scientific diversity as a Society of fellow clinicians, scientists and science policy regulators from academic, industrial, and government sectors. Register early and save.
The meeting will be held at the Marriott Baltimore Waterfront. Located in Baltimore's Harbor East neighborhood, the Marriott Baltimore Waterfront sits on the water's edge. You'll enjoy spectacular views from this Inner Harbor hotel, as well as easy access to the city's finest shopping and restaurants. A reduced sleeping room rate of $199 has been obtained at the Marriott Baltimore Waterfront. The Society has a contractual agreement with the Marriott Baltimore Waterfront to provide rooms at a reduced rate. Attendees are encouraged to help the society meet its contractual agreement by staying at the Marriott Baltimore Waterfront.
Emeritus members are encouraged to attend the meeting and the Education Courses. Reduced registration rates have been established for Emeritus members of the Teratology Society to participate in the Annual Meeting. To qualify for this rate you must be an approved Emeritus Member of the Teratology Society.
We applaud the 2012 Program and Education Committees for preparing an outstanding meeting. The 2012 program represents the great strengths of our multidisciplinary Society and presents something for everyone. We invite you to experience the excitement in Baltimore!
